Incumbency protection racket

November 1st, 2006 Leave a comment Go to comments

I was thinking about all the Obamarama again, and I think I finally found out why it seemingly sprang out of nowhere, 2 years after his big spotlight time. The answer: he was releasing his book and just starting his book tour.

Which got me to thinking about how I still think he’s a paper tiger and how he totally shivved Ned Lamont, which got me to thinking about all of the prominent Democrats who have either promised to campaign with Lamont and then bailed on that promise (Obama), or refused to campaign for Lamont even after he won the Democrat primary. These wastrel Dems include: Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, Bill Clinton, Harry Reid, and John Edwards.

Here are the Democrats who have actively campaigned for Lamont: John Kerry, Maxine Waters, Wesley Clark. And maybe Russ Feingold.

That’s just shameful. It’s obvious that DC is in many ways an incumbency protection racket. Party schmarty, it’s about supporting your friends on the cocktail weenie circuit. Lieberman turned on Reid and Clinton by getting them to pledge their support in return for not promising an independent run… then he ran as an independent.

How do you not shiv the guy who bucks the will of the people and your party? The guy who is a GOP operative masquerading under your old caucus rules. There is no easier line to defend, party-wise, than a former member leaving that party. That each and every Dem is not coming out and publicly supporting Lamont is a shame to the party and a fairly damning example of one of the reasons they lose so frequently in the last 30 years.

The sad part is that this behavior has bled over into advocacy groups. NARAL, which has one issue to promote and support, still backs Joe “In Connecticut, it shouldn’t take more than a short ride to get to another hospital [if a rape victim is denied EC]” Lieberman. AARP did the same thing with the heinous medicare drug/big pharma welfare bill.

I don’t think NARAL’s constituency is being properly served by their leadership, much in the same way that Democrats are not being served by theirs.
